LiveOn with us for 2024-2025

Current Penn State students (this includes students who are currently a first-year student for the 2023-2024 academic year, as they will be an upper-class student next year) who want to live in University Housing for the 2024-2025 academic year will need to participate in the LiveOn Housing Process. The LiveOn Housing Process allows students the opportunity to view available housing options before committing to living on campus. If a student is interested, they can then proceed with selecting a housing option and creating/accepting a Housing and Food Service (HFS) Contract.

Current Penn State students who are eligible to #LiveOn next year will need to REQUEST HOUSING during the established LiveOn Housing Process timeline. The  LiveOn Housing Process is managed through the eLiving system, which requires a student to authenticate using their Penn State Access Account User ID (e.g., abc1234) and password.

Every student who Requests Housing will receive an invitation to view available housing options and #LiveOn next year! However the University is not able to guarantee that every student will be able to select a specific preferred housing option. This assures that every student has the opportunity to live on campus next year. The housing process also supports gender inclusive housing assignments.

Students who Request Housing are not obligated to LiveOn. However, once a student has agreed to the Terms, Conditions, and Regulations of the HFS Contract, typed their name, and clicked the "Accept Contract" button, the student is then obligated to the HFS Contract and living on campus. The HFS Contract cannot be cancelled for a student to move off campus.

Step 3: Request Housing

Eligible students interested in living on campus for the next academic year will need to Request Housing in eLiving during the LiveOn Housing Process timeline

  • 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET October 1 - 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET October 31: Students who Request Housing in October will be eligible for the November invitation process
  • 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET December 1 - 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET February 14 (extended from January 31): Students who Request Housing in December 1 - February 14 will be eligible for the February invitation process

Invitations are offered on a random basis, not on a first-come, first-served process. The date that a student Requests Housing is not considered when housing invitations are made.

All students who Request Housing will receive an invitation to #LiveOn!

Students who are not eligible to Request Housing, or who do not participate in the process, may add their name to the On-Campus Housing Waitlist in eLiving, which opens at 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET December 1. HFS Contract offers for either a double room, traditional residence hall or supplemental housing will be made starting on Mondays in late-March, and will continually be offered on Monday afternoons until the beginning of the fall semester.

Step 4: Housing Invitation

Invitation steps

An invitation provides the student the opportunity to review available housing options, select a space, invite friend(s), and then create/accept the HFS Contract through the eLiving system. All students who Request Housing will receive an invitation; invitations are randomly made on the following timeline:

Request Housing Invitations
12:00 p.m. (noon) ET October 1 -12:00 p.m. (noon) ET October 31 Mondays and Thursday in November, starting November 6
12:00 p.m. (noon) ET December 1 - 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET February 14 (extended from January 31) Mondays and Thursday in February, starting February 19

The number of students who Request Housing will determine how many invitation rounds are made, as not all students will receive an invitation on the same day.

Invitations are sent out on Mondays and Thursdays (between noon and 5:00 pm) throughout November and February. Once a student receives an invitation, the student will need to complete the entire process before the invitation expiration date:

  • Monday invitations expire Thursday at 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET
  • Thursday invitations expire Monday at 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET

Logon to eLiving to view the invitations; either select View Invitation under the Contracts icon, or select the Shopping Cart.

View and select a housing option

The invitation will display all housing options and indicate the amount of space remaining. As students select a housing option, the space available will decrease. Once a housing option is filled, it will no longer be available to select, but will be grayed out.

Select a housing option and click the "continue" button.

Add a Friend

You can add a friend to your invitation! Adding a friend is not required to select a housing option. If a group of students want to live together, the first student to receive the invitation should select the housing option and add friends to ensure the group is assigned together.

  1. Friend must be eligible (must have Requested Housing and not accepted a HFS Contract yet)
  2. Friend can be any gender
  3. Depending upon housing option selected (no friends can be added to single rooms), up to 3 friends can be added,
  4. Adding a friend will reserve the housing option selected for you and the friend(s), and create HFS Contract offers for each person
  5. Each student must accept the HFS Contract by the deadline date.

Review your selection

Review your select and click "Create Contract"

Step 5: Accept your HFS Contract

contract steps

eLiving will create an HFS Contract offer for the student and friend(s), which will be added to each student’s eLiving Shopping Cart. This means that some students may receive an email with a HFS Contract offer (instead of an invitation), since their friend added them to the invitation. Once the HFS Contract offer is available, each student is responsible for individually accepting the HFS Contract offer before the invitation process expiration date. If the HFS Contract offer is not accepted by the expiration date and the offer expires, the offer cannot be remade.

  1. Click the ‘Begin Contract Signing Process’ button to view and read the HFS Contract agreement and Terms, Conditions, and Regulations (TCRs).
If you log out before accepting the offer, the HFS Contract Offer will be available in your Shopping Cart until the offer expiration deadline
  2. Check the box to indicate that you have read and agree to abide by the Terms, Conditions, and Regulations (TCRs).
  3. Type your name to electronically sign the HFS Contract.
  4. Click the ‘Accept Contract’ button.

Be sure to read the fine print for your HFS Contract before you accept - once you have accepted the HFS Contract, you are legally bound to that contract for the specified semester(s). You may not cancel the HFS Contract after it has been accepted.

Step 6: HFS Contract Preferences

HFS Contracts for upper-class students are "preference" HFS Contract - meaning, the student can indicate preferences for housing area, building, room type, roommate(s) (if applicable, depending upon HFS Contract type - does not need to be the same person(s) added as friends to the invite), and Campus Meal Plan level. Preferences indicated are NOT guaranteed. The Housing Assignment Office will try to accommodate preferences requested if space is available.

Housing preferences can be modified in eLiving on the Contracts > Update Preferences page until 12:00 p.m. (noon) April 2.

The Campus Meal Plan level for 2024 fall semester can be modified in eLiving on the My Info > My Meal Plan page until 12:00 p.m. (noon) December 20, 2024

Step 7: Room Assignment

Room assignments for the 2024 fall semester will be available in eLiving on the My Info > My Room page at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Tuesday July 16.

Room Exchange eBoard

The eBoard for the 2024 fall semester is available in eLiving on the My Info > Room Exchange eBoard from 12:00 p.m. (noon) Tuesday July 16 through 12:00 p.m. (noon) Tuesday August 6.

Eligibility Guidelines

Eligibility to Request Housing is based on a student's residency and campus status:

Students who are eligible to participate in the LiveOn Housing Process:

  • Students currently living on campus at University Park (during the 2023-2024 academic year)
  • Students attending a Commonwealth Campus
  • Students who are new to Penn State or deferred admission to spring semester will be eligible to Request Housing during the second Request Housing timeframe, once they have scheduled spring courses.

Students who are not eligible to participate in the LiveOn Housing Process:

  • Incoming first-year students (they accept the HFS Contract through the admissions process)
  • Students who currently live off campus at University Park
  • Students who did not Request Housing in accordance with the LiveOn Housing Process timeline
  • Students who were released from the HFS Contract
  • Students transferring from another university

Students who are not eligible to participate in the LiveOn Housing Process or who did not initially participate may still live in University Housing. The "On-Campus Housing" Waitlist will open 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET December 1. After the LiveOn Housing Process concludes in February, HFS Contract offers will be released on Monday afternoons starting late-March to those on the Waitlist, provided that space is available. Beginning in April, students must have scheduled University Park classes for the fall semester. HFS Contract offers will be for either a double room traditional residence hall OR supplemental housing. There is no guarantee that housing will be offered to every student on the Waitlist.
