Pest Emergencies

In the event of a pest emergency (bats, bees, bed bugs) – please immediately contact the RA on duty, Housing Operations, or a Residence Life staff member. You can also call the Housing Operations Office. We strive to make sure we address requests quickly through the Penn State pest management program

Tips

  • Leave immediately and close the door behind you.
  • It’s important to take care of the problem before the situation gets worse and/or spreads. The process can be lengthy and requires your full cooperation.
  • Do not try to get rid of pests yourself. Pest infestations are difficult to treat effectively and should only be done by licensed, trained professionals. By treating yourself, you may actually make the situation worse.

Bed Bugs

  • It's not about cleanliness. Anyone can get bed bugs.
  • Bed bugs are often picked up while traveling (spring break, abroad, etc.).
  • When entering a hotel room, check for bed bugs immediately.
  • Awareness is key to prevention. Know where to look.

Bats

  • While the University recognizes that bats are not a welcome guest in the residence hall, bats overall are beneficial to the community as they consume thousands of insects each night.
  • Bats can fit into cracks and crevices the size of a dime and can tuck themselves into the smallest gaps.
  • If you think you may have been exposed (bitten or scratched), you should seek medical attention within 24 hours.

Bees

  • Don’t panic. Any sort of provocation may lead to a bee attack.
  • If you encounter a bee(s), leave the room as quickly as possible.
  • If you have been stung multiple times, or experience severe pain, seek medical attention immediately.
