Self-Select Room Assignment Process

Current Penn State students who are returning to live in their Living Learning Community (LLC) for the 2023-2024 academic year have the unique opportunity to self-select their room assignment! No other student group is eligible to self-select a room assignment.

Attend a Webinar at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday March 16. The webinar will provide an overview of the self-select process and a live demo of choosing a room in eLiving.

Incoming first-year students who are interested in an LLC should NOT attend this webinar, as the self-select room assignment process is not applicable.

    Process Overview

For current students with an accepted LLC HFS Contract for the 2023-2024 academic year:

    • When accessing eLiving, use a web browser other than Chrome to ensure optimal performance. Chrome may prevent a student from properly selecting a room assignment.

    • Students can view available rooms in eLiving starting at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, March 16, but cannot select a room until their scheduled date and time. Only rooms blocked for the specific LLC will be displayed. The rooms displayed may be different than rooms used for the 2022-2023 academic year, as rooms for incoming first-year students are not available for self-select. As rooms are selected, the space will no longer display as available.

    • View room and board rates for the 2023-2024 academic year

    • Each LLC group determines the order that students are scheduled for the self-select process, whether it be by points earned or semester standing. The Housing Assignment Office does not determine the self-select order.

    • Students can view their self-select date and time in eLiving > Summary, then select the 2023-2024 HFS Contract. The first page of the HFS Contract outlines the process and indicates the start date and time.

    • Room assignment changes can be made until 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Monday April 3

    • The Housing Assignment Office will process a room assignment for students who do not self-select a room assignment. Not selecting a room will not release the student from the HFS Contract obligation.

    Roommate Requests

    • Roommates must have accepted the same LLC HFS Contract to use the self-select process.

    • Roommate requests must be mutual - both students must indicate each other as a roommate preference. Once the roommate status is showing as confirmed, then the student with the earliest self-select date can make an initial assignment for both students. Students should determine who has the earliest self-select date, as that student should then select a room assignment for the group.

    • Students can change their room assignment throughout the process until the deadline. However, if a student has a LLC roommate and changes their room assignment after the initial selection, the room change is only processed for the student, not the roommate. The roommate will also need to process the room change.

    • If a student has a roommate request who is not a part of the LLC, the Housing Assignment Office will review preferences to determine the feasibility of assigning students together. If there is not enough space to accommodate the pair in the LLC, the students may be assigned to another space.

How to Self-Select a Room Assignment

Beginning at the student's scheduled time, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to eLiving using a web browser other than Chrome

Note: if the student logs in prior to their scheduled begin time, the student must refresh the browser at the designated time to update the page so it allows the self-selection process to be active

    2. Click My Room

    3. Select UP > fall 2023-spring 2024

    4. If applicable, add requested roommate in the Housing Contract Data section on the My Room page. Roommates must have the same type of LLC HFS Contract to be assigned together during the self-select process. If a student has a roommate who is NOT a part of the LLC, the Housing Assignment Office will review preferences to determine if it's feasible to pair students together in the LLC space.

    5. Under the Room Search section, click on the available area, building, floor, and room types to view the list of available rooms

    6. Select a room

    7. Click the Take This Room button to confirm choice

The Take This Room button will NOT APPEAR unless it's the students scheduled time to select a room!
*Keep in mind, other students will also be selecting a room at the same time. It is possible that students can select the same room at the exact same time but only one student will actually be assigned.

    8. Verify room selection has been processed by making sure that the room selected appears in the top section of the My Room page
